What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session | Fieldstone Counselling & Wellness

What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

Starting therapy can feel like a meaningful step. You may feel hopeful, nervous, uncertain, or relieved that you have finally made space for support. However you arrive, your first session is not about having everything figured out. It is simply a beginning.

At Fieldstone Counselling & Wellness, we offer a steady, compassionate space where you can feel heard, supported, and respected. Whether you are attending counselling in person in Mount Forest, Ontario, or connecting through a virtual therapy session, your first appointment is designed to help you feel comfortable and begin building a strong foundation for care.

Your First Session Is About Getting Oriented

The first therapy session is often a chance to slow down and get familiar with the process. Your therapist will welcome you, review any important information, and help you understand what counselling may look like moving forward.

You do not need to prepare a perfect explanation of what is happening in your life. Many clients arrive with only a general sense that something feels heavy, stuck, overwhelming, or ready for change. That is okay.

Your therapist may ask about what brought you to counselling, what you have been experiencing recently, and what you hope may feel different over time. The pace should feel thoughtful and respectful.

You Can Share as Much or as Little as Feels Right

A common worry before a first counselling session is, “What if I do not know what to say?”

That is completely normal.

Your first session is not an interview you need to perform well in. It is a conversation. You are welcome to share what feels most important, and you are also allowed to take your time. Trust is built gradually.

Some clients begin by talking about stress, anxiety, grief, relationship challenges, burnout, life transitions, or feeling disconnected from themselves. Others may start with practical concerns, such as sleep, work, family responsibilities, or difficulty coping day to day.

There is no single right way to begin.

We Will Talk About Your Goals

Therapy goals do not need to be polished or specific at the start. Sometimes a goal sounds like:

“I want to feel less overwhelmed.”

“I want to understand myself better.”

“I want to cope differently.”

“I want to feel more grounded.”

“I am not sure what I need, but I know I need support.”

Together, you and your therapist can begin shaping those hopes into a direction for counselling. Over time, this may include building coping strategies, processing difficult experiences, strengthening boundaries, improving relationships, or reconnecting with your sense of self.

We Will Review Confidentiality and Consent

Your therapist will review important information about confidentiality, consent, privacy, and how your information is handled. This helps make sure you understand your rights and what to expect from the counselling relationship.

In most situations, what you share in therapy remains private. There are some legal and ethical limits to confidentiality, such as concerns about safety or risk of harm. Your therapist will explain these clearly so you can ask questions and feel informed before continuing.

You Do Not Need to Have a Crisis to Come to Therapy

Therapy is not only for moments of crisis. Many people seek counselling because they want a safe place to reflect, make sense of their experiences, or receive support before things become unmanageable.

You may benefit from counselling if you are navigating:

  • Anxiety, stress, or overwhelm
  • Grief or loss
  • Burnout or compassion fatigue
  • Relationship or family challenges
  • Life transitions
  • Low mood or emotional heaviness
  • Self-esteem or identity concerns
  • Parenting stress
  • Trauma or difficult past experiences
  • A desire for personal growth and deeper self-understanding

At Fieldstone Counselling & Wellness, therapy is approached with care, curiosity, and respect for your story.

What If You Feel Nervous?

Feeling nervous before your first therapy session is very common. It can feel vulnerable to meet someone new and talk about personal parts of your life.

Your therapist’s role is not to judge you or rush you. Their role is to help create a safe, grounded space where you can begin where you are. You are allowed to ask questions, pause, take a breath, or let your therapist know if something feels difficult to talk about.

Therapy works best when it feels collaborative. You and your therapist are working together.

In-Person and Virtual Therapy Options

Fieldstone Counselling & Wellness offers counselling options designed to support accessibility and comfort.

For some clients, in-person therapy provides a helpful sense of separation from daily life. Coming into a calm office space can create room to focus, reflect, and receive support without distraction.

For others, virtual therapy offers flexibility and convenience. Online counselling can allow you to attend from a private space at home, reduce travel time, and make ongoing care easier to fit into your schedule.

Both options can offer meaningful, professional support. The best fit depends on your needs, comfort, privacy, and preferences.

For in-person sessions, Fieldstone Counselling & Wellness is located at 130 Main St N, Mount Forest, ON N0G 2L2. You can find directions here: Get directions to Fieldstone Counselling & Wellness.

What Happens After the First Session?

At the end of your first session, you and your therapist may talk about next steps. This could include booking another appointment, discussing session frequency, identifying early goals, or considering what support may be most helpful.

There is no pressure to have everything resolved after one appointment. Therapy is a process. The first session is simply the first step.
